A literature review summarizes and discusses recent evidence for the possible existence of an association among microbial metabolism, diet, and carcinogenesis. A number of studies have shown that dietary factors can alter the metabolism of the intestinal flora which can affect the metabolic production of carcinogens and cocarcinogens in the intestine. Topics of this review include: relationships of environmental and dietary factors in cancer induction; the effect of diet on the composition of intestinal microflora; the association of intestinal bacteria, diet, and steroid metabolism with large bowel and breast cancer; the influence of diet on intestinal bacterial beta-glucosidase and -glucuronidase enzymes and cancer induction; detoxification of carcinogens by intestinal microflora; and the interaction of diet with intestinal bacteria in studies of chemically-induced tumors.
