Efficacy of fungicides and screening of mango cultivars and hybrids for resistance against Phyllosticta sp. causing leaf blight disease

Efficacy of sixteen fungicides were tested in-vitro against Phyllosticta sp. causing leaf blight in mango by well method. Out of these, PMA-1 per cent and MEMC-6 per cent (2000 ppm each), bavistin (500 ppm) and benlate (1000 ppm) were observed to be most effective in checking the growth of the fungus. The effective fungicides were further tested using cut-twig method on inoculated leaves by spraying. Only bavistin (500 ppm) and benlate (500 ppm) proved effective in controlling the infection while PMA-1 per cent and MEMC-6 per cent showed phytotoxic effect on leaves. Screening of eighteen popular mango cultivars was done in-vitro by cut-twig method. Van Raj, Rajapuri, and Azum-us-Samar were observed to be tolerant. The matured fruits of these cultivars and two hybrids were further screened by fruit inoculation technique wherein one hybrid (Neelum X Kesar-Stock-1-17/6-1) was observed to be resistant while Van Raj and Neelum were found to be tolerant. Cultivar Van Raj proved tolerant against both leaf as well as fruit infection, whereas cultivar Dadamiyo proved susceptible. Rest of the cultivars were moderately susceptible.
