The interaction of vitamin A and zinc: Implications for human nutrition

Accumulating animal and human research studies suggest an interaction between vitamin A and zinc in retinol mobilization from liver stores and in retinal pigment metabolism. Interactions of these 2 nutrients may also play a role in clinical disorders such as chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cystic fibrosis, chronic liver disease, alcoholic cirrhosis and infantile protein-energy malnutrition. Synergistic deficiency of both nutrients has been observed in pregnant rats. Zinc deficiency has been implicated in retinal dysfunctions including night blindness and abnormal dark adaptation, despite adequate vitamin A nutritional status. Thus, clinicians should consider nutrient-nutrient interactions whenever deficiency symptoms in patients are found.
