In the course of 4 trials, S-strain and PDRC chickens were exposed to the JM isolate of Marek's disease virus after surgical bursectomy at 1 day of age and/or sublethal total-body X-irradiation at 2 days of age. Bursectomy, especially when coupled with X-irradiation, rendered most birds incapable of producing antibodies after inoculation with killed Salmonella pullorum antigen and bovine serum albumin. The incidence of Marek's disease infection and gross and microscopic lesions was not altered appreciably from that of controls. The intensity and character of the lesions appeared to be independent of the various treatments. Thus, it is concluded that the bursa of Fabricius is not essential for the development of Marek's disease in chickens.
