The chemical composition of a composted sugar mill by-product (SMB-P) with different humification period and its effect on dry matter yield of blackberry (Rubus spp.) were evaluated. The chemical characteristics concerned were pH, CEC, C, N, humic acids (HA), functional groups, including the carboxylic content of the composts. In addition, the zero point of charge (deltapH), C:N ratio, and the E4:E6 optic density ratios were calculated. In a greenhouse experiment, five doses of SMB-P (0, 1.875, 3.75, 7.5, and 15 g kg(-1) soil) and five humification periods SMB-P (0, 8, 12, 24, and 36 months) were evaluated in the blackberry dry matter production. Results showed that the chemical properties of compost were influenced by the humification period. pH, HA content, total functional groups including the carboxylic and CEC of the SMB-P increased during the first 12 months of humification; the HA content increased until 24 months of humification, whereas the C/N ratio decreased from 45 to 12.95, and the E4/E6 from 4.7 to 1.7 during the research period (0 to 36 months). The dry matter production obtained with the SMB-P without humification was lower (2.937 g plant(-1)) than that obtained with the other treatments (Tukey, 0.05). The dry matter yield obtained with the 3.75 g kg(-1) soil dosage was higher (4.8 g plant(-1)) than that obtained with the other doses (DSH0.05).
