Measures of DNA curvature

There is currently great interest in being able to predict equilibrium curved (or bent) structures of DNA, and in using these predictions to interpret the anomalous mobility of some DNA fragments on polyacrylamide gels. We present and discuss several approaches to quantitatively measuring the curvature of predicted three-dimensional DNA structures, including several alternative characterizations of the geometry of the super-helical curvature as well as an approach based on the energetics of deformation of DNA. We observe that neither of the two models currently being used to predict DNA curvature is wholly quantitatively correct in relation to the available experimental data.
