Stability of the B vitamins in mixed parenteral nutrition solution

A study investigated the effects of fluorescent light, direct sunlight, and indirect sunlight on the stability of B vitamins in parenteral mixes. B vitamin levels were determined by microbiologic and spectrophotometric measurements. Most B vitamins were found to be stable. Direct sunlight, however, did destroy all of the riboflavin-5-phosphate in the mixtures over an 8-hour period, and resulted in destruction of 86% of pyridoxine HCl. Indirect sunlight destroyed 47% of riboflavin-5-phosphate in the mixtures. Folic acid was still viable after a 7-week storage period. B vitamins in parenteral nutrition solution can be accurately assessed by microbiologic assay. (kbc)
