Assessment of malnutrition using body composition analysis
1981
Keenan, Ronald A.
A procedure for measuring body composition has been devised that uses multiple isotopic dilution techniques and indirect measurement of total exchangeable potassium, based on its relation to body cell mass. Ke can be calculated using the ratio of the sodium-potassium content divided by water content of a blood sample, multiplying by total body water, and subtracting total exchangeable sodium. This index as a measure of malnutrition was compared to other indices, and seemed to reflect changes in body composition more sensitively. Thus it can provide valuable information in nutritional assessment of seriously ill patients, although it may not be sensitive enough to reveal early response to nutritional support in certain cases.
