Composition of miner's lettuce (Montia perfoliata)

The gold rush of California gave rise to the use of miner's lettuce, a low growing succulent eaten raw in salad or cooked as a pot herb. It has become a common weed in orchards and vineyards, and its nutritional composition and value have been evaluated to determine its worth as an addition to the diet. Nine samples from 2 sites were collected over a 6-month period, analyzed for nutrient composition and compared with 21 other leafy green vegetables. Miner's lettuce has a low energy value; 1 cup (raw) would provide 33% RDA of ascorbic acid, 22% of vitamin A, and 10% of iron. Oxalic acid content is low and its calcium-oxalic acid ratio of almost 4:1 by weight indicated a moderate amount of utilizable calcium. Miner's lettuce compares favorably with other leafy green vegetables.
