Comparison of Video Color/Trash Meters for Measurements on Cotton

The Agricultural Marketing Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture uses a color meter as part of a High Volume Instrument classification system for lint cotton and is considering combining it with a trash meter for measurement of the trash in lint. Duplicate measurements on seed cotton and lint were used to compare two of the combined color/trash meters. Reflectance, color, area, count and trash measurements were significantly different between the two meters; however, Plus b measurements on ginned lint were not. Regression comparison of measurements by the two meters yielded R2 values (coefficients of determination) ranging from 0.55 for seed cotton Plus b to 0.94 for lint reflectance. Regression of the area and count (number) of trash particles in seed cotton indicated by the trash meters were well correlated, R2 = 0.89 and 0.91, respectively. Results indicate that the color/trash meters are sufficiently accurate for measurement of color and trash and for subsequent incorporation in a gin process control system, but each meter must be calibrated separately.
