Even though soils at Villarreal, Terrenate, Tlaxcala, show a high incidence of nematodes of the species Globodera rostochiensis, potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L.) continue to be grown in the zone since this activity still represents important economic income. In the present study, the effects of nutrient management and nematicide application on nutrient status, nematode infection and tuber yield were evaluated in S. tuberosum var. Tollocan, grown in a soil infested with G. rostochiensis. The factors and levels tested in the experiment were soil fertilization (0, 50, and 100% of the optimal NPK dose recommended for the region), nematicide Furadan (with and without), and foliar fertilization (with and without, based on plant requirements determined by using DOP indices), combined in a factorial arrangement 3 x 2 x 2 with three replicates. Results indicated that tuber yield increased 4.1 t ha(-1) per level of soil fertilization and 4.8 t ha(-1) when soil and foliar fertilization were combined (as compared with treatments with soil fertilization alone). Nematicide application produced a yield increase of 3.6 t ha(-1). The nematode colonization, the number of nematodes per root segment, and the number of cysts significantly decreased, were unaffected, or increased with soil fertilization, nematicide application, and foliar fertilization, respectively. Moreover, when the three factors were combined, the number of cysts significantly decreased. Nematode colonization and number of nematodes per root segment decreased with increasing foliar Mn and increased with increasing foliar Zn.
