Effects of refeeding on adipocyte metabolism in the rat

Fat cell metabolism in rats was studied in 2 ways: metabolism in relation to number and size of fat cells of the epididymal fat pad, and metabolic comparisons of liberated fat cells separated into size categories. The fasted-refed rats were also compared to ad-libitum fed controls. Glucose incorporation into carbon dioxide, triglyceride glycerol and fatty acids was elevated in refed rats; the effect was exaggerated in carbon dioxide and fatty acids due to low levels of these metabolic activities in controls. This elevated metabolism in fasting-refeeding is an adaptation of fat cell metabolism and not an increase in small fat cell density in adipose tissue; this knowledge may be applicable to obese humans who have a rapid relapse after weight loss.
