Historical published data, supported by herbarium specimens, provide valuable information concerning the occurrence of a given species in a given area and its distribution. The aim of the present study is to verify the distribution of bryophyte species for Belarus and Lithuania, which hitherto has been based mainly on data provided in “Zapiski bryologiczne” by Szafnagel (1908). Here, we present the results obtained following the revision of 15 specimens from the Szafnagel collection (WI), and confirm or refute the presence of 10 species. The research confirmed the distribution of Catoscopium nigritum, Pelekium minutulum and Bucklandiella microcarpa. The revision did not verify the occurrence of Campylopus flexuosus, Dicranodontium asperulum, Palustriella decipiens, Pogonatum aloides, Pseudocampylium radicale, Rhynchostegium confertum and Sciuro-hypnum plumosum, since the specimens, on examination, were redetermined to be other species.
