An examination has been made of the accuracy of various methods of estimating the number of bushels of corn of 15.5% moisture per 1,000 pounds of ear corn (or the alternative measure of pounds of ear corn per bushel of corn of standard moisture). It is shown that the established practice of utilizing a relationship between the desired characteristics and moisture content is subject to considerable errors of estimation. Furnace drying of weighted samples of ear corn with subsequent shelling and moisture determination of kernels gives estimates of low error with small numbers of samples, but it is frequently held that this method is costly of time and labor. It is shown that observations of shelling percentage on a small number of samples in addition to the determination of the moisture content of the kernels may be used to give estimates of considerably greater precision than the precision of estimates based on observations of moisture content of kernels alone.
