Surrogate eggs, chimaeric embryos and transgenic birds

The embryo of the domestic fowl is one of the best studied examples of vertebrate development. A mixture of commercial interests, availability and ease of study have produced a wealth of descriptive and experimental data for understanding its embryology (Lillie, 1919) but in the past decade an entirely different set of propositions have been posed. These range from queries about the possibility of raising the progeny of endangered species in "surrogate eggs" through to the use of the techniques of genetic engineering in the poultry industry. This article will briefly consider a number of those possibilities and indicate some of the surprising aspects of comparative physiology and biochemistry that are relevant to them. In the first part consideration is given to the conditions necessary to develop an embryo in culture while the second section is involved with genetic and species manipulations.
