Can breast feeding cause dental caries?

A literature review assessed the validity of recent reports that have indicated that dental caries can occur in breastfed infants under certain conditions. It was found that the possibility that breastfeeding can cause dental caries is genuine. Lactose is capable of lowering dental plaque pH and is, hence, potentially cariogenic. Cow's milk is less cariogenic due to its mineral content and buffering capacity. It was concluded that the only cause for concern would occur for infants who undergo prolonged (until up to 2 years of age) "at will" breastfeeding, particularly during the night. Simultaneous intakes of undesirable foods, poor oral hygiene, and low fluoride intakes can further complicate this problem. (wz)
