Comparative study of tomato production strategies for long-cycle crop in enarenado and for inter-planting in different substrates systems in the Mediterranean area

Increasing yields and quality of horticultural crops in greenhouses is one of the priorities of the productive sector in the Mediterranean area. Strategies like inter-planting, when several short-cycle crops are overlapped instead of growing a single long-cycle crop, allow constant production with a high yield all year round. The objective of this study was to determine and compare yields and production costs of the inter-planting system using two different substrates (coconut fiber and perlite) with the most common system in Almería, long-cycle crop in enarenado. Inter-planting was the most productive system, with increases of 20% in commercial production compared with the soil (enarenado). The economic study, the long-cycle, in enarenado was the most profitable option (28% net profit) of the production practices that were studied.
