Dietitians in continuing care retirement communities: workload and overload

Our study examined the number of hours per week of professional dietary services (registered dietitian, or RD, hours) and the concomitant residents per hour to be served in continuing care retirement communities (total RD hours per week divided by number of residents in the facility). Pennsylvania is of particular interest because of the absence of specific minimum guidelines for the hours of professional dietetics services, which allows administrators to determine the appropriate number of hours. One of the advantages of in-depth interviews is the richness of the information gathered; investigators can explore topics with some intensity. One of the weaknesses of this type of qualitative research is the limitation of generalizing the findings.
