Make the praise equal the raise
1984
Rodman, T.A.
Too often, salary considerations are the basis for employee performance ratings. Allen-Bradley Co. paired the employee reviews with salary considerations, based on realistic assessments of performance levels and pay raises. The initial step, developing specific definitions of performance catagories, and the means of overcoming employee resistance to the plan, are explained. A computer program has been generated to determine the overall cost of merit increases, taking into account the performance rating, present salary position, and date of last employee increase. The system developed here has enabled the company to control the monthly payroll budget and prevent undue inflation of the annual salary budget. Historical background of the Allen-Bradley program and the specific definitions developed for each of the 5 employee performance catagories are given in sidebars. (emc)
