A brief technical discussion reviews available data requiring explanations concerning protein-energy interactions, and examines the questions of mechanisms that might explain such data. The complexity of these interactions are highlighted. Specific attention is given to the role of hormones and enzyme activity in intermediary metabolism, noting the range of disciplines needed to address the apparently simple question of the energy and protein requirements of normal and premature neonates.(wz)
