Hold your horses!
1982
Horsemeat prices are rising because of inflation and Europeans' increased demand. In 1981, the US sold 55,235 tons of horsemeat overseas (about 1% of the domestic horse population); also horsemeat was sold as dog food. Horsemeat compares favorably to beef in nutritional value. By law, wild horses cannot be sold to slaughterhouses; however the law is difficult to enforce. Stealing domestic horses is a well practiced method of providing slaughterhouses with horsemeat. (rkm)
