Eicosanoids in neoplasia

A technical review summarizes and discusses recent evidence on lipid nutrition, eicosanoids, and cancer in terms of 3 areas, viz.: (1) eicosanoid production; (2) pathophysiological actions of eicosanoids in breast cancer; and (3) the modulation of arachidonic acid metabolism with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in experimental mammary and prostate tumor systems. It is pointed out that a number of basic questions concerning the relation of n-3 fatty acids to eicosanoid formation and neoplasia currently are being explored. Directions for further research also are discussed.(wz)
