Inheritance of resistance to the cowpea rust fungus in cowpea cultivar Calico Crowder
1996
Ryerson, D.E. | Heath, M.C.
Macroscopic and microscopic examination of the interaction between race 1 of the cowpea rust fungus (Uromyces vignae) and the progeny of a cross between a resistant and a susceptible cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) cultivar was used to investigate the nature of the cowpea rust resistance genes present in the resistant cultivar. Both the monokaryotic and the dikaryotic forms of the fungus were studied on all plants. The different levels and the inheritance of resistance patterns shown by F2 and subsequent progeny suggested the presence of multiple genes and the presence of dominant and recessive resistance components. Some of the resistance elements acted preferentially toward the monokaryon. Full elucidation of the different plant phenotypes was possible only after microscopic examination, as a number of cytologically different interactions with the fungus appeared identical macroscopically.
