To aid in the planning of weight control programs, a survey was undertaken to assess the variables of body image, desired weight, and prevalence of body image disturbance in 22 men and 46 women college students. A questionnaire gathered data on attitudes about weight and certain body dimensions, present weight, and dietary practices. Triceps skinfold thickness and reported height and weight were noted also. The results showed that 54% of the subjects were dissatisfied with their weights, women more so than men. All of the overweight women and men desired to be in a lower weight category. Perceptions of body image were realistic in 55% of the men, but only 37% of women.
