Production and transport of carbohydrates in some cultivars of muskmelon

Mobilization of carbohydrates in leaves of 19 genotypes of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) differing in total carbohydrates, starch, glucose, fructose and sucrose content, was investigated. Maximum carbohydrate concentration occurs in cv. Gallicum and, as expected, a maximum is also obtained for sucrose, glucose, fructose and starch. Other cultivars, such as Gold-King and Dorado have higher concentrations in other forms of carbohydrates analyzed. The sucrose/glucose +fructose ratios may serve as indicators of the predominance of a certain carbohydrate (Goloso and Cantaloupe). During leaf ripening which occurs between days 25 to 60 of the biological cycle, carbon is normally integrated into carbohydrate molecules. A decline in starch and other carbohydrates was recorded after 60 days growth. The export speed of carbohydrates falls with the onset of foliar senescense.
