Determination of Fruit Bearing Pruning Date and Cutting Intensity in "San Pedro" (Ficus carica L) Type Fig Cultivars

The purpose of this abstract is to know the productive behaviour of fig cultivars of the “San Pedro” type, when subject to specific pruning dates on yearly shoots, and with different cutting intensities. Thus, a test plot of the “San Pedro” type was established during March, 1996, and each year a fruit bearing pruning was carried out on four different dates: June 20th, July 10th, August 1st and August 20th. On the other hand, three different types of cuts were applied :on each date and on each of the tree shoots: removal of the end bud of the shoot; removal of half of the yearly shoots; and removal of the whole shoot, with the exception of two or three basal buds. The data obtained during three years (1998, 1999 and 2000) are used to present the results of accumulated yield, tree vigor, mean weight of fruit, productivity, number of shoots per cut and length of shoots. This showed that there are significant differences in yields and productivity depending on the dates and the type of cut; thus, the greatest yields are achieved when pruning is carried out in the earliest date, that is, June 20th, and with a less intense cut. On the other hand, the values pertaining to the tree’s vigour and mean fruit weight do not show any significant differences when related to the dates of pruning, although these values do increase when cutting is only done on the terminal bud. As to the number of shoots produced by the cut, there are no significant differences between dates, and their number increases significantly as more vegetation is removed. In relation to the length of shoots, differences are clearly significant between pruning dates, with length increasing as pruning is brought forward; and between cuts, when it also increases with the intensity of the cut.
