Zinc and the central nervous system
1987
Wallwork, J.C.
A comprehensive technical review summarizes and discusses currently available information concerning the effect of zinc (Zn) nutriture and metabolism on brain function, including its in vivo interaction with other essential minerals and trace elements (Cu, Mn, Mg, Na, K, Ca). Other topics include: the effect of Zn status on various mental disease states; methods for the determination of brain Zn levels; human behavioral effects associated with Zn deficiency; the possible association between anorexia and Zn deficiency; perinatal brain damage resulting from an early Zn deficiency; and some of the noted interrelationships between Zn status and neurometabolism (protein and nucleic acid synthesis; neurotransmitters and their receptors; the 7S nerve growth factor; and Zn-binding proteins). Recent findings on the relationship between Zn and neurotransmission are summarized.(wz)
