Response of two cultivars of cauliflower to simulated insect defoliation
1990
Stewart, J.G. | McRae, K.B. | Sears, M.K.
Cauliflower cultivars 'Snowball Y' and 'Polar Express' were defoliated every week by 0, 8, 18, 36, and 58% during the interval of growth from transplantation to head initiation (Period 1); from head initiation to harvest (Period 2); or from transplantation to harvest (Period 3). Leaf area at harvest, head weight, and proportion of harvested heads with a diameter of at least 10 cm decreased as the level of defoliation increased. Plants defoliated during Periods 2 and 3 were, in general, more seriously affected than plants defoliated during Period 1. Estimates of the number of cabbage looper equivalents needed to reduce head weight by 1% were higher for plants defoliated during Period 1 compared with plants damaged during Periods 2 or 3.
