Pollen morphology of some selected plum genotypes in the sub-tropics

The low chill plums grown in Indian sub-tropics have the potential for supplying fruits to the domestic and export market due to early ripening. The present day cultivars need genetic improvement for developing elite cultivars. The pollen is the vehicle through which the genetic code of male gametes is transferred to female gametes. The pollen quantity in flowers and quality in terms of viability, germination, longevity, morphology are important components of fertilization and fruit setting. A study of pollen traits is required approach for fruit breeding. The pollen studies conducted on eight genotypes showed high variability in respect to stamen number (20-29), stamen length (0.45-0.78 cm), stamen to pistil length ratio (ranged from 1.01-1.12), and anther color (varied from gray-orange to orange-red). Pollen germination in 15% sucrose solution differed significantly in the tested genotypes. Pollen retained viability after short-term storage (300 days) caused an abrupt decline in pollen viability.
