Adaptive suckling
1978
Jelliffe, Derrick B. | Jelliffe, E.F.Patrice
An editorial summarizes characteristics of suckling which have become adapted over the millenia to the needs and way of life of different mammal species, particularly to the maturity of the newborn, their special nutritional requirements, the usual number of offspring, and need for sensory stimulation. To illustrate the variety of protective mechanisms involved, some aspects of adaptive suckling are summarized for certain contrasting species. Reasons for and results of the widespread use of cow's milk based formulas are briefly examined.
