Fasting and the precipitation of labor: The Yom Kippur effect
1983
Kaplan, Michael | Eidelman, Arthur I. | Aboulafia, Yeshaya
Delivery room records in a Jerusalem hospital were analyzed for a 15-day period in 1981 and 1982 to assess the effect of a 24-hour total food and water fast on the spontaneous onset of labor in pregnant Jewish women. The number of deliveries on Yom Kippur (the actual day of fasting) was not significantly different from the baseline mean for the study periods (11.9 and 12.0 deliveries for 1981 and 1982, respectively). The number of deliveries for the 24-hour period following the fast, however, was significantly different (22 and 26 deliveries for 1981 and 1982, respectively). Hence, a risk may exist for women having a tendency for early delivery should they undertake such a 24-hour total fast. (wz)
