Assessment of microbial diversity in Maharashtra
2012
Murumkar, D. R. | Borkar, S. G.
A total of 263 nitrogen fixing and 93 phosphate solubilizing microorganisms were isolated during the year 2010 from the rhizosphere soils of six different physiographic regions of Maharashtra. Out of 263 nitrogen fixing isolates, 94 isolates were identified as Azotobacter chroococcum, 76 as Rhizobium spp., 83 as Azospirillum lipoferum and 10 as Azospirillum brasilense. Among the 93 phosphate solubilizing isolates, 47 isolates were identified as Bacillus megaterium, 29 as Aspergillus awamori and 17 as Penicillium digitatum. The microbial diversity analysis using Shannon, Richness and evenness index indicated that the physiographic regions are quite variable with respect to nitrogen fixing and phosphate solubilizing isolates. Such variations were credited to the differences in the soil types, plant species, root exudates, etc. in different physiographic regions. Therefore, there is a need to conserve this treasure of diversity for future exploitation in bio-fertilizer technology.
