Dietary fiber--in historical perspective
1976
Bing, Franklin C.
This review provides a brief critique, from the viewpoint of a laboratory experimenter, of what has been done and what might be done to obtain a better understanding of the components of dietary fiber and their metabolic behavior in health and disease. The nature and properties of some dietary fiber components are described: cellulose, lignin, hemicelluloses and pectin. Measurement, nomenclature and sources of dietary fiber are reviewed. Problems for further research are enumerated. Charts list diseases and conditions associated with low fiber diets and the approximate dietary fiber content of several high fiber products.
