Trend and variation in production and procurement of rice and wheat across major states in India

Indian economy is primarily an agricultural economy and one third of population depends upon the agricultural sector directly or indirectly. In this sector contribute to the gross domestic product (GDP) is about 25 per cent and the source of livelihood nearly 60 percent of the population. “The importance of agricultural markets for India arises from the fact that farming households account for 60 percent in rural areas and direct income from farming activities accounts for over 50 percent of farm household incomes (NSSO 2005)”. Procurement, grading, storing, transporting and selling are all these activities which are mostly related to agricultural marketing. Rice and wheat are the most important food grain crops in India. The total food grains production in India is about 271.98 million tonnes out of this, rice and wheat production is as regards 108.36 and 96.64 million tones (accordingly Department of Agriculture, 2017). The present paper attempt to study the Trend and Variation in Production and Procurement of Rice and Wheat across Major States in India and it is based on secondary data from the period 2000 to 2016. For the trend analysis simple growth rate has been used.
