Nitrogen Mineralization and Uptake from Douglas-Fir Forest Floors
1978
Youngberg, C. T.
Many different plant species grow in the understory in association with Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco]. The nature of the forest floor that accumulates in a Douglas-fir forest is influenced by these associated species. Nitrogen uptake from forest floor materials developed under nine commonly occurring stand understory conditions was evaluated in a greenhouse experiment with Douglas-fir seedlings. The net mobilization of N as measured by the uptake of N by two successive crops of Douglas-fir seedlings ranged for 0.34 to 9.89% of the amount added as organic matter. Net N mobilization was related only partially to total N content of the material.
