Similar to many industrial sectors, the metallurgical business is dominated by efforts to essentially reduce the carbon footprint. Predominantly, technologies based on hydrogen are under investigation, which, for different reasons like high costs, the necessity for the development of new processes or high safety measures, are difficult to realize. One alternative could be seen in the utilization of pyrolyzed biomass, which would allow a direct substitution of fossil carbon in different fields. The present work describes the basic characterization of charcoal out of biomass as well as possible applications and related pros and cons. For this, especially from the technical point of view reactivity and mechanical strength are important criteria. From the economic perspective availability and pricing have to be studied in detail. Summarizing, a positive conclusion can be drawn regarding utilization of appropriate charcoals first of all for smaller metallurgical units, especially with the view on an economic, short-term realization.
