Caffeine content of herbal and fast-food beverages

A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure was used to determine caffeine levels in coffee and cola samples obtained from 6 fast-food restaurants, a variety of coffee substitutes, several herbal teas, and a popular cola drink. The caffeine in the coffees ranged from 1.1 mg/100 mL coffee in decaffeinated coffee to 71 mg/100 mL in instant coffee. The caffeine content of the fast-food coffees varied considerably, while the variation was less for the colas. The herbal teas and coffee substitutes that contained herbal ingredients had no detectable caffeine. The results depict a wide variation in caffeine content of a given beverage type. (wz)
