Genomic analysis in the genus Aegilops. I. Interspecific hybrids between tetraploid species sharing a common genome

Hybrids between tetraploid Aegilops species sharing a common genome (U, D or C) were analysed at metaphase I by using a C-banding technique in order to establish genome relationships. In all cases it allowed discrimination between associations of chromosomes with similar morphology and C-banding belonging to the same genome (homomorphic associations) and associations involving different chromosomes (heteromorphic associations) and, in addition, it was possible to identify a given genome in most interspecific hybrids and, consequently, to analyse the different types of association between them. It was shown that in most cases the divergences between the shared genomes (U, D or C) in different tetraploid species of Aegilops are at present substantial despite their common origin. On the other hand, genomes present in the tetraploid Aegilops species mostly maintain patterns of evolutionary affinity similar to those reported for their putative diploid donors although, in some cases there are differences indicating either that modifications occurred during the evolution of the polyploid and/or diploid species or that the proposed diploid parents are not correct.
