Evidence for increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus in childhood

Stewart-Brown, Sarah | Haslum, Mary | Butler, Neville
Data are reported on the number and characteristics of diabetic children in the 3rd British national birth cohort study (Child Health and Education Study). Prevalence of diabetes mellitus among the cohort of children in the present study, studied at age 10, was 0.13% (13 per 10,000). Comparison with prevalences of earlier cohort studies indicated that diabetes mellitus prevalence is doubling about every 10 years. Data from the current study further indicate that childhood diabetics are a socially advantaged group. The rapid and consistent increase in prevalence implies the influence of environmental rather than purely genetic factors. (wz)
