A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind cross-over study in 20 young, healthy, normal weight volunteers (10 women, 10 men; mean age, 23.8) assessed whether moderate supplementation of dietary fiber affected fecal energy excretion, energy intake, hunger, and their defecation pattern. The results indicated that the fiber supplement: (1) increased fecal energy excretion and the number of bowel movements, producing a softer stool consistency; (2) decreased hunger; and had no affect on mean energy intake. It is suggested that dietary fiber supplements may be therapeutic in managing obesity.(wz)
