Response of intestinal mucosa to gluten challenge in autistic subjects
1979
McCarthy, Denis M. | Coleman, Mary
No evidence was found to indicate that coliac sprue causes steatorrhea or hypocalciuria in autistic children. Consequently, the presence of milk steatorrhea or hypocalciuria should not be used to justify the initiation of a gluten-free diet. Steatorrhea in autistic children may be caused by a number of factors, such as pancreatic insufficiency, parasitic infestation, or bacterial contamination. Behavioral changes due to gluten did not appear in these subjects. It therefore seems likely that if grain-rich diets do produce behavioral changes in autistic children, some agent other than gluten is responsible.
