Readability: A Factor in selecting teaching materials
1984
Thompson, Cecelia K. | Davis, Patricia L.
The readability of teaching materials can be assessed using a number of criteria. Several readability indexes exist which can be used to estimate the grade reading level (GRL). Readability formulas are only guides, as other factors affect comprehension, such as format, content, abstraction, and organization. Reading skills can be taught stimultaneously with subject matter content. Examples of basic vocabulary development based on contextual clues are given. Study guides can help the move from literal thinking to thinking levels requiring intrepretation and application. An example of how a study guide can be used for home economics subject material is presented, along with an exercise showing how graphs and charts can be used to highlight the information being presented.
