Effect of oral contraceptive agents on vitamin and mineral requirements
1980
Thorp, Valerie J.
The metabolism of certain nutrients is known to change when women use oral contraceptives (OCAs) though the exact relationship is not clear. Recent research on the less understood nutrient needs is reviewed to help determine if supplementation is necessary for OCA users; the substances are pyridoxine (vitamin B6), folacin, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin A, ascorbic acid, zinc and copper. Research methods seem to affect data outcome in some cases, as well as length of time on OCAs, previous nutritional status, presence of disease or subsequent pregnancy. Further study is indicated to provide more accurate ways of determining the interactions between nutrients and OCAs; present knowledge indicates that supplementation of the diet is necessary only for certain groups whose nutritional status is affected by other factors.
