Guidelines for effective delegation

Delegation is vital to good supervision. The following factors should be considered in determining which activities should be delegated to which employees: 1) the difficulty of each activity and the skills involved; 2) the past and present work record of the employee; 3) the employee's potential; and 4) the interest exhibited by the employee. The following key points in providing instructions to subordinates are discussed: 1) establishing performance requirements clearly; 2) defining extent of delegated tasks; 3) defining extent of support to be provided; 4) encouraging creativity and independence; 5) communicating the nature of the task; 6) keeping track of progress; 7) assessing results periodically; 8) providing positive nonverbal communication; and 9) providing feedback to employees on their performance.
