Hesseltine, C.W. | Bothast, R.J. | Shotwell, O.L.
In a study of maize delivered under government loan in 1972 to the Agric. Stabilization & Conservation Service, Diehlstadt, Missouri, and stored on farms, representative samples from each of 1283 truck loads were assayed for aflatoxins and plated for determining the presence of the most common moulds. In addition to Aspergillus flavus, other moulds recorded are listed. Aflatoxin was detected in 394 of the samples, and all but 7 contained A. flavus. A. parasiticus was detected only 15 times. No correlation seemed to exist between the grade of the maize and the presence of A. flavus. The occurrence of A. flavus in 3 loans closely paralleled the aflatoxin content of the samples.
