Human milk calcium and phosphate levels of mothers delivering term and preterm infants

The calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) content of human milk was evaluated for the 1st month of lactation in mothers of 10 term and 15 preterm infants, and serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OHD) and mineral changes of these wholly breast-fed infants were assessed during the 1st month of life. Higher levels of Ca were found in preterm milk than in term milk on day 14 (6.7 and 5.5 mg/dL, respectively) and on day 30 (6.4 and 5.7 mg/dL, respectively); the same trend was noted for P levels. The total Ca and P levels were similar between term and preterm milk, and both decreased during the 1st month of lactation. No difference in serum Ca and 25-OHD was noted between preterm and term infants, or between preterm and term mothers. (wz)
