Hypersensitivity to mains tap water in children: Its clinical features and treatment
1983
Wilson, C.W.M.
Diagnosis and treatment of children's sensitivity to domestic drinking water contaminants are discussed. Clinical features of domestic water sensitivity and specific diagnostic procedures are described. These features are evident in specific body tissues (e.g., the alimentary canal, skin, the urinary tract) which the water contaminant contacts. Contaminants (e.g., antigens, haptens) also induce symptoms in the peripheral and central nervous systems. As with other allergens, these contaminants cause an initial stimulation, followed by a reduction in cellular activity during cellular sensitivity development. Successful treatment can be achieved by excluding the use of domestic water, although withdrawal symptoms may occur. (wz)
