Susceptibility of Semi-Looper (Synegia sp.) Infesting Black Pepper (Piper nigrum L.) to Entomopathogenic Nematodes

Study on infectivity of eight entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), Heterorhabditis indica, Steinernema sp. (IISR-EPN 02), S. ramanai (IISR-EPN 03), S. carpocapsae (IISR-EPN 06), Oscheius spp. (IISR-EPN 04, 05 and 08) and O. gingeri were tested against 4th instar larvae of the semi-looper (Synegia sp.) infesting black pepper. The suitability of this larvae for multiplying EPNs, attachment to and penetration into host were also studied. Among test EPNs, H. indica, Steinernema carpocapsae and O. gingeri were more pathogenic to semi-looper as they caused 100 per cent mortality to the insect within 72 h. Maximum number of IJs attached into larva at 12 h post exposure. Maximum number of S. carpocapsae IJs penetrated into larva, followed by H. indica. However, the minimum number of O. gingeri IJs penetrated into the test insect body. Maximum multiplication of infective juveniles was observed with O. gingeri followed by Oscheius sp. (IISR-EPN 04) and Oscheius sp. (IISR-EPN 08). The infectivity of EPNs against semi-looper (Synegia sp.) is being reported for the first time which opens up a new vista in eco-friendly insect pest management in 4th instar larva of black pepper.
