Corn and soft red wheat in beef finishing diets

Three 70% grain diets formulated to contain approximately 73% TDN and 9% digestible protein were each fed to 25 calves, each of three years to evaluate corn-wheat combinations in beef finishing diets. Diet 1 contained ground corn as the grain source, diet 2 contained 50% corn and 50% dry-rolled wheat and diet 3 contained 25% corn and 75% wheat. No buffering agents were included in the diets, and no digestive disturbances were observed during the trials. Diets were fed in self feeders in .8 ha lots to crossbred yearling cattle averaging 298 kg at trial initiation. Treatment diets had no significant effect (P<.05) on final weight, total gain, feed consumption, feed conversion rate, carcass weight, dressing percent, quality grade oryield grade.
