The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementation of zinc oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on performance, carcass characteristics, concentration of Zn in tibia and serum and metallothionein (MT) mRNA expression on different organs in commercial broiler chicken. A total of 120 day-old broiler chickens were assigned to 4 dietary treatments with 3 replicate and 10 broiler chicken per replicate. Dietary treatment includes T1 (Basal diet without Zn), T2 and T3 supplementation of basal diet (BD) with 40 and 80 mg/kg of zinc oxide and the last T4 supplementation of ZnO NPs at 20 mg/kg, respectively. The study lasted for 42 days. Lower as only one dose of ZnO NPs supplementation up to 20 mg/kg did not affect the growth performance which was comparable with Zn oxide treatment groups. Carcass traits remained comparable to all other treatment groups. Meanwhile, it was noticed that supplementation of Zn either in oxide or in Nanoparticles had a significantly higher concentration of Zn in tibia and serum. ZnO NPs at 20 mg/kg showed the increased MT mRNA expression in all the organs. Hence, the present study indicated that dietary Zn supplementation could be reduced up to 20 mg/kg when supplemented as ZnO NPs without affecting growth performance and carcass traits.
